How to get there
The best way to get to Sounio is by car, but there is a coach available from Athens. It can take up to an hour to get to Sounio, depending on which village you are planning on staying in.
If you wish to stay somewhere close to the temple of Poseidon, then it is best to stay in the town Lavrio, the village Keratea or the town Anavissos.
There are plenty of apartments and hotels available, some are luxurious whereas others are casual. If you are looking for an apartment that’s pet friendly and is close to the Poseidon temple, then consider booking at Angel in Charakas studio.
If you are looking for a beach that is picturesque and has clear blue waters then check out Kape beach. It is unorganized, which means that you would need to bring your own umbrellas and towels.
If you are looking for a family friendly beach that is a lot more relaxed and is organised, then check out Charakas beach. It can get very busy and even though there are two organised spaces on the beach, there is also a section that is unorganized; therefore you can bring your own umbrella and seats with you.
If you’re looking to party in the day and continue into the night, then you should go to Castus beach bar. It is a great spot for evening cocktails and for star gazing. The theme of the bar is bohemian, with large tepees available to hang out in. You can also enjoy a night swim under the stars.
Temple of Poseidon
Sounio is famously known to be the home of the temple of Poseidon. It is popular among both tourists and locals, for it is one of the best spots to watch the sunset and sunrise. The entry is 10 euros for people who are 26 and older, whereas it is free for those who are 25 and under.
Even though the temple of Poseidon is the main attraction, there is also a cliff top that you can walk on and check out some of the most spectacular views of the sea and surroundings. There is also a restaurant located next to the temple, in case you want to enjoy your meal with a stunning view.
