Here’s what you can eat in Lisbon

Portugal is not only a beautiful country, but it also has a delicious cuisine that is suitable for everybody’s taste buds. Here are a few things to try when you visit Lisbon.

Fresh fish and seafood dishes are very popular and common in Portugal, especially Lisbon. You will find a lot of different ways of salted cod being cooked and Bacalhau Com Natas is one of them. 

It is salted cod layered along with onions, potato and cream and topped with bechamel sauce. It is then baked in the oven, giving it a creamy and soft texture. This can be found in typical traditional Portuguese restaurants.

Pasteis de Nata is the national’s favorite sweet pastry snack. It is a small egg custard tart with a flaky pastry base and dusted with cinnamon on top.

It can be bought anywhere and there are particular pastry shops known for the way they make these delicious little pastries.

‘Pastry Santo António’ is a pastry shop that can be found near São Jorge Castle and Pastéis de Belém is another pastry shop that is located in Belém. Both are very popular among locals and traveler’s and can have a long queue outside.

Sardines are the nation’s favorite and most popular fish when being caught for fishing. A traditional way of eating fresh sardine is to have it grilled and then served on a slice of bread. You do not add any sauce or anything on top, you just eat it as is. Just look out for the bones when eating it.

If you are not a fan of fish but prefer meat, then not to worry since another typical dish served in Lisbon is steak topped with a fried egg, along with either black beans, fries or rice.

This dish can also be served in food courts in their shopping centers as it is a filling meal to have as an early lunch.

If you are looking for a fast lunch then they do baguettes with Jamón (ham) and cheese or with tuna and mayonnaise. Jamón is dry cured ham which is a popular delicacy in Portugal.

If you are vegan or cannot eat gluten then not to worry, you can still enjoy delicious Gelato in the warm weather. One place in Belém sells them and is located near the marina. It is called Ciao Ciao Italian and the vegan Gelatos have different flavors such as strawberry, lemon, Berry fruits, melon and passion fruit.
